Driving FAFSA Completion: Tips & Strategies

To boost FAFSA completion rates, schools should implement a comprehensive and inclusive approach. This includes structured support, effective communication, peer and family involvement, progress tracking, and strategic incentives.

1. Awareness & Access

  • Start with Students: Encourage students to complete their portion of the FAFSA first, then invite parents to continue.
  • Multi-Channel Communication: Use email, texts, social media, newsletters, bulletin boards, and CCR platforms to reach families in their preferred format.
  • Strategic Messaging: Share timely reminders, deadlines, tips, and success stories to keep FAFSA top of mind.

2. Family & Peer Mentorship

  • Leverage Trusted Voices: Involve parents and students who’ve completed FAFSA to reduce anxiety for others.
  • Classroom Integration: Weave FAFSA support into courses and curriculum where possible.
  • Build Peer Leadership: Identify student leaders to share their FAFSA journey.
  • Community Language Support: Engage bilingual families to assist others—especially non-English-speaking households—while ensuring privacy and confidentiality.

3. Completion Tracking & Support

  • Monitor Progress: Use state systems or CCR platforms to track FAFSA completion and self-reporting.
  • One-on-One Support: Offer personal sessions to help students and families finish the application and schedule follow-ups as needed.
  • Incentivize Completion: Motivate students with meaningful rewards—discounted prom tickets, gift cards, school swag, or VIP experiences.
