Over the past several years, schools and districts have significantly expanded what college and career readiness can encompass. Students may now encounter career exploration earlier, choose among diverse academic and career pathways, participate in dual enrollment, pursue industry credentials, engage in work-based learning, and prepare for a wider range of postsecondary options. With that expansion comes a more complex challenge for schools and districts. They must ensure that students and families can understand, navigate, and take advantage of the opportunities schools have worked so hard to create.
Communication is a critical part of that work. Access to an opportunity depends on whether students know about it early enough to prepare, understand how it connects to their goals, recognize the steps required to participate, and complete those steps within the necessary timeframe. Families may need their own information to help students weigh decisions, anticipate requirements, and work through unfamiliar processes. A missed message can therefore become a missed opportunity, particularly for students and families who are less familiar with the systems, terminology, and timelines that shape college and career readiness.
This backdrop means that it is vital that counselors and CTE educators build communication into the progression of college and career readiness itself. That includes anticipating when information can influence a decision, distinguishing between what students and families need to know and what they need to do, and planning outreach that moves from early awareness to timely reminders and targeted follow-up. The goal is to make communication more intentional, so that the right information reaches the right people at the point when they can use it.
Technology can make this work substantially more manageable. A college and career readiness platform can connect communication directly to the activities, opportunities, and resources students are navigating, help educators reach the specific groups who need a message, schedule outreach around important milestones, and identify students or families who may need additional follow-up.
This toolkit provides practical tools to help counselors and CTE educators put that approach into practice, from planning communication across the college and career readiness calendar to creating messages for students and families, selecting the appropriate channels, and using AI to adapt communications more efficiently. Used together, these tools help ensure that the opportunities schools have worked to create reach the students and families who stand to benefit from them.
