Description

Big Y Foods, Inc. is one of the
largest locally-owned supermarket
chains in Southern New England.
A family-owned and operated
corporation, Big Y has represented
excellence in the food industry since 1936.
In tribute to both its employees and its customers, Big Y offers an
annual scholarship program. Established in 1984, the program includes
a series of scholarships which honor Big Y’s founding brothers; the late
Paul H. and Gerald E. D’Amour.


All Big Y scholarships recognize academic merit and achievement.
They are awarded to the most academically outstanding students
in the Big Y market area.

Requirements

Big Y scholarships are open to employees and their dependents, and customers and
their dependents. To be eligible, a student’s permanent residence or school must be located within Western
or Central Massachusetts, Norfolk County, MA or the state of Connecticut. (ALL employees are eligible
regardless of residence.) Awards are given in the categories of High School Senior, Community College,
Undergraduate, Graduate and Nontraditional Students (students not of traditional college age.) In addition,
there are special scholarship series recognizing the contributions of area law enforcement officers and
firefighters, as well as the tremendous sacrifices made by Military Servicemembers and their families.

Complete the application and attach the following:
a. Copy of transcript of grades. (need not be official)
b. Copy of college board scores, if taken. (need not
be official) (SAT, ACT, GRE, GMAT, LSAT, etc.)
c. At least two letters of recommendation, including
at least one from a teacher. High School Seniors
and College Freshman can submit copies of
letters written for college entrance.

d. Personal resume / fact sheet detailing activities,
achievements, awards, community involvement,
leadership positions and class rank (if available).
e. Students applying for a scholarship in the Military
category must include a readable photocopy of
the Servicemember’s military ID card.
Mail all documents in a single 9”x12” envelope.
No paperclips or staples.
Application MUST be postmarked
no later than February 1st to be eligible.

Information on the application must be complete
and all of the supporting documents must be
postmarked by February 1 to be eligible.
Incomplete applications, and those postmarked
after the deadline, will not be considered.
All applications will be reviewed by the Big Y
Scholarship Committee. The decision of the
committee is final. Scholarship recipients will be
notified by letter and their names posted on the
Big Y web site in early May. Non-recipients will
NOT be notified. Big Y encourages students who
have not received an award in the past to re-apply
throughout their academic career.
Previous scholarship award recipients
are not eligible to re-apply.
