Description

Since the inception of The American Legion Legacy Scholarship immediately following the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, The American Legion offers its support to the children of fallen post-9/11 service members through this annual scholarship. It remains our civic duty and a point of pride to ensure these children are able to receive the best education possible after losing a parent in defense of this country.

While our federal and some state governments offer significant aid to this class of children whose parents were lost in war, a funding gap remains. The American Legion through its Legacy Scholarship is able to bridge the financial needs gap to ensure these children are able to cover the cost of their education. Currently, the average cost of one-year’s tuition and fees is $9,139 for in-state public universities, $22,958 for out-of-state students at a public university, and $31,231 at a private university. These numbers may only rise, as the cost of college tuition has been rising at a rate of roughly 7% per year for decades.

For our children of the fallen, The American Legion stands ever vigilant to help defray these costs.

The amount of aid and number of awards depend upon the income derived from the trust. Scholarship recipients may re-apply for the award.
