Established in 2002, this program awards scholarship of up to $5,000 to students who demonstrate a strong desire to pursue a career as a Spanish-language broadcast journalist. This program is made possible through a donation from Univisión network news anchor, and NAHJ founding member María Elena Salinas. Her generosity has been matched by the Univisión network, which has also contributed to this award. This scholarship is awarded to college undergraduate and graduate students. Recipients of the María Elena Salinas Scholarship may also have an opportunity to intern with either the news division of the Univisión network or with a Univisión affiliate.
Applicants must be high school seniors, undergraduates or first-year graduate students who plan to pursue careers in journalism in Spanish-language television or radio. The award includes an opportunity to intern with the news division of Univision or an affiliate. Applicants must write an essay in Spanish outlining their career goals and provide Spanish-language samples of their work.
