Established in 1958 to recognize outstanding contributions to the science and technology of primary and secondary cells and batteries and fuel cells.
Presented: annually at the fall meeting
Contents: scroll, prize of a $2,000, travel assistance to the meeting if required, and membership in the Battery Division for as long as an ECS member
Lecture: requested but not required
Call for nominations: December of every year
Nomination deadline: March 15
The granting of the Research Award shall be based upon an outstanding achievement in, or scientific contribution to, the science of primary and secondary cells and batteries and fuel cells. The Research Award shall be given to the author or coauthors of a paper or papers, at least one of which must have appeared in a publication of The Electrochemical Society, reporting the new advances in knowledge of batteries or fuel cells. The definition of the field of interest covered by the Research Award shall be "that area of electrochemical knowledge which deals with the mechanisms, theory, materials and design of devices (primary and secondary cells and batteries and fuel cells) in which the chemical energy can be converted into usable electrical energy by an electrochemical process."
The importance and significance of the achievement or contribution shall be judged on the basis of the paper(s) in which it is reported. To be considered, the paper(s) must show scientific excellence of a high order. Factors to be considered include:
originality of concept and design of experiments
thoroughness of the experimental approach
logic of the conclusions
clarity of presentation
The overall importance of the contribution to the fundamental aspects of batteries and fuel cells. It is the intent of the Research Award to recognize recent achievements or contributions to the field that can be expected to have an impact on future research and development. Because the significance of the work may become more evident with time, consideration may be given to papers that have appeared as much as ten years prior to the first of May of the Research Award year.
Research Award Recipient Requirements
Only currently Active Members of The Electrochemical Society may be considered for the Research Award. Except for this requirement, the selection of the Research Award recipient(s) shall be based solely on the contribution or achievement as defined under the Scope of the Research Award. Factors such as the length of membership or activities in the Society, number of publications, age, sex, color, race, religion, political affiliation, and nationality of the recipient(s) shall not be considered.
The Research Award is to be given not more frequently than once every year and is not to be given if, in the opinion of the Battery Research Award Committee or the Battery Division Executive Committee, a satisfactory recipient has not been or cannot be found, or if the Treasury of the Battery Division contains insufficient funds to finance the Research Award as of the first of April of the Research Award year.
Research Award Committee
Selection and Term: The Research Award Committee shall consist of a Committee Chair and six other members of the Division appointed by the Chair of the Battery Division. Members shall be appointed to serve for two years with staggered terms and will not be Officers of the Division. If a member is elected as an officer of the Division during his/her term on the Committee, he/she must resign the position on the Committee. Vacant positions shall be filled at least one year before the date of the fall meeting of the Society at which the Research Award may be made (thus the present Chair of the Division will appoint members for the award to be chosen in the year after his term as Chair). Members of the Committee may not serve for more than two consecutive terms. The names of the Chair and the members of the Committee shall be reported to the Society headquarters at the time of their appointment and shall be announced at the annual business meeting of the Battery Division. The Chair of the Committee shall be appointed by the Chair of the Division for one year (at least one year prior to the Award date as for members) and must have served as a member of the Committee for at least one year prior to his/her appointment as Chair. In the event that a Research Award recipient is not named by the Committee because of lack of a suitable candidate, the Committee may be discharged or reappointed by the Chair of the Division. The Chair of the Committee may not serve more than two consecutive terms.
Duties of the Chair: The Committee shall make its selection of the Award recipient or come to the decision that a suitable recipient was not found, and report its findings to the Division Chair for approval by the Executive Committee of the Battery Division no later than one week prior to the spring meeting of the Society. The selection of the Committee must be presented in writing to the Honors and Awards Committee of the Society for approval at its spring meeting. If approved by the Honors and Awards Committee, the choice of the recipient(s) shall be announced to the Society headquarters and the Board of Directors of the Society at the spring meeting of the Society. The Chair of the Battery Division shall prepare the wording of the Award scroll and the appropriate news release by the first day of June. Upon approval of the Award recipient(s) by the Honors and Awards Committee, and notification of the Board of Directors, the Chair of the Battery Division shall notify the Research Award recipient(s) and invite the recipient(s) to present a lecture at the fall meeting of the Society.
The chair of the research/technology award committee will confer with the chair of the technology/research committee after all nominations are received. If any person has been nominated for both awards, the two chairs will contact the Chair of the Battery Division, and the three of them will decide which award is the most appropriate for the candidate who has been nominated for both awards.
Additional Duties of the Chair: The Chair of the Committee must see that each nominee gets fair consideration by the members of the Committee. To ensure this, the Chair of the Research Award Committee may not make a nomination and may vote only in the case of a tie. The Chair shall also be responsible for ensuring that selection, approval, and notification of the Research Award recipient(s) are made according to the timetable given below. The Chair also makes the announcement of the Award, and solicits nominations from the Division membership at the annual business meeting of the Division one year before the Award is to be made. The Chair also ensures that the solicitation of nominees is published in a Society or Division publication that is distributed to all Division members (see Time Table). In the event that the selection of the Committee is not approved by either the Battery Division Executive Committee or the Honors and Awards Committee, the Chair of the Committee will see that additional data on the named recipient(s) are furnished, an alternative recipient(s) is named, or the Award is postponed to the following year.
